Adult Carer Support

Our Adult Carer Support services are there to empower unpaid carers. Our expert team provides a wide range of practical and emotional support enabling individuals to care for those they love whilst maintaining a life of their own.

You are an unpaid carer if you support a family member or friend that is ill, disabled, elderly, has mental health issues or substance misuse problems. The support you offer may include shopping, cooking, dealing with medication, or attending medical appointments with the person you care for. The person you care for could live with you, in their own home, or even in residential care.

Action for young carers

(Please note this service is only available for young carers in the city)

If you are a young person aged 5 to 18 who cares for a family member at home, we’re here to help you. You could be looking after a parent, brother, sister, grandparent or other relative who may be affected by a disability, mental health or any other long term illness or condition.

You could have a varied caring role offering support in one or more of the following areas:

  • Emotional – listening to the person you care for’s worries and concerns
  • practical – shopping, cooking, cleaning and/or paying bills
  • physical – heavy lifting i.e shopping and pushing wheelchairs
  • personal – supporting around washing dressing etc

Everyone is different. That’s why AYC will take the time to ensure you and your family receive the kind of support you need.

Maybe you need some time off every now and then, or perhaps you want someone to speak to your school or social worker on your behalf.

You might just want to have a bit of fun and meet other young carers. Whatever it is, AYC is geared up to meet your personal needs. Here are some of the things AYC offers:

  • Advocacy for (speaking on behalf of) Young Carer
  • Your own support worker
  • Young Carer groups
  • Information about the condition of the person you care for
  • Help to access other services that might benefit you
